Neurodiversity

The team behind The Animated Mind of Oliver Sacks is committed to representing the neurodiverse world with compassion and respect. To that end, we are putting together an advisory panel of individuals from within the communities where Oliver worked including (but not limited to) individuals with Autism, Tourette’s Syndrome and Parkinson’s. These advisors will will participate in feedback screenings and work collaboratively with the filmmakers to ensure accuracy and sensitivity in representation.

Once the film is complete, will work work with these advisors and community stakeholders to screen the film within those communities. We will also work closely with the Oliver Sacks Foundation to promote and screen the film. We hope to launch in 2026 in conjunction with the 40th Anniversary of the publication of The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, Oliver’s breakthrough book.  We are committed to expanding Oliver’s legacy while also honoring the patients he worked with.

Impact

The Animated Mind of Oliver Sacks intricately weaves together themes of medical bias, neurodiversity, mental health, sexual identity, coming-of-age, and the deeply human quest for acceptance and belonging. At its heart this is a film about finding connection and it speaks directly to our current epidemic of loneliness and isolation. (The US Surgeon General declared loneliness a public health crisis in 2023. In 2022, the EU conducted its first loneliness survey, and in 2018, the UK established a Minister for Loneliness.)
